Today, students continued to work on their research project. They spent a majority of the morning working on their presentations. Afterwards, students worked on their personal poster. Lastly, students finished off their day by touring the mind spa and participating in group activities!
Yesterday, our students got the chance to have a conversation with OSU President Ed Ray. President Ray reflected on stories from his journey to OSU and then the students shared what they were most excited about as they start their college careers. In the afternoon, we went on a field trip to a poplar tree farm/research site in Jefferson where we had lunch, learned about the Advance Hardwood Biofuels Northwest project, and toured the site. Among other things, the students learned how researchers from OSU are using poplar trees to create bioenergy. Bioenergy SMILE Summer Bridge students & President Ed Ray
Students spent the morning doing activities with campus librarians that helped them better navigate the OSU online database and access articles that supported their research project. In the afternoon students heard from the Department of Diversity and Cultural Engagement and did activities that helped them to better understand Cultural Capital and campus resources through the cultural centers. The students ended the day hearing from Pre-College Programs professor Kyle Cole who talked about professionalism in college. Students learned strategies for reaching out to professors such email etiquette and relationships with professors.
Today, students were introduced to their research projects by attending a lecture along with hands on activities. They were able to see what type of feedstock (from simple sugars to complex sugars) ferments best with yeast. They also made plastics from different bio sourced materials, and tested them to see which plastic made the best spoon handles. Later on, students were separated into groups to start their research on their projects. Lastly, the day ended with a map of their journey to OSU along with a team-building activity.
Our students received a warm welcome yesterday while moving into the residence halls. Afterwards, our students got to know each other better with icebreakers and team building activities then spent their first night on-campus! Today, our students broke up into groups and met their Academic Coaches to discuss goal setting and academic success in college. Then, each group participated in a campus-wide scavenger hunt to find important local landmarks from the Memorial Union to Dutch Bros. Check out the slideshow below for photos of the scavenger hunt! |
